The Book That Read Itself

Lily had always been a book lover. Every weekend, she visited the old bookstore on Baker Street, where she could spend hours searching for rare books.

One day, while browsing through a dusty shelf, she found a strange book with no title on the cover. It was leather-bound, with golden edges, but when she opened it, the pages were blank.

Confused, she took it to the shopkeeper, Mr. Finch.

“This book is empty,” she said.

Mr. Finch’s eyes widened. “That book chooses its reader,” he whispered. “Take it home. See what happens.”

Curious and a little nervous, Lily bought the book and carried it home. That night, as she placed it on her desk, something strange happened.

The book flipped open on its own. Words began to appear on the pages, forming sentences right before her eyes.

"Lily Carter, are you ready to know the truth?"

Her heart pounded. It knew her name.

She turned the page. More words formed.

"You have forgotten who you are. But the book remembers."

Lily’s hands shook. “What does that mean?” she whispered.

The words changed again.

"Turn the last page when you are ready."

Lily hesitated, then flipped to the final page. The book glowed softly. A memory flooded her mind.

She saw herself as a little girl, standing in the same bookstore. Mr. Finch, much younger, handed her the book and said, "One day, it will find you again."

Tears filled her eyes. She had been here before. But how had she forgotten?

The glow faded. The book snapped shut.

The next morning, she rushed to the bookstore. "Mr. Finch, the book—"

But the shop was empty. Dust covered the shelves. The door was locked.

A small sign in the window read: "Closed for 20 years."

Lily stepped back, her heart racing. Had the bookstore ever been real?

And then, she felt it—the book in her bag, warm against her back, waiting for her to read it again.
